St Stephen's Church, Skipton

Virtual Tour - the Roof

The ceiling of St Stephen's was made from Broughton wood and paid for by Sir Charles Tempest. Mr Smith the head joiner on the Broughton estate made it and it was valued at £200 in 1836.

It is modelled on the roof of Skelton church near York and has a distinctive dog-tooth design. The church roof was repaired in 1910 and again in 1968. At that time six sky-lights were also let into the church roof.
