St Stephen's Church, Skipton

Virtual Tour - Our Lady's Shrine

The Mother of God, Mary has a special place in the Catholic heart. She is venerated as the Mother of the Lord, the Highest Honour of our Race. Her purity and humility are virtues every true Christian aspires to and she is seen as the Model and Mother of all Christians and the Image of the Church.

This shrine erected in her honour is also carved from alabaster and marble in 1900 and was matched in 1904 with the Sacred Heart Shrine. The marble panels depict the Assumption of Our Lady and Her Coronation as Queen of Heaven. Both these scenes from the Glorious Mysteries of the Rosary are indicative of the Christian destiny which is 'the resurrection of the dead' to glory with the Blessed Trinity. Another panel on the base of the shrine (below) shows the Annunciation of the angel Gabriel to Mary.

The four saints are Ss John Berchmans and Peter Claver, both Jesuit saints and Ss Stephen and Monica, patrons of the parish.
