MASS OF CONFIRMATION

Friday 21 November 2003

7.00pm

Bishop David Konstant celebrated the Mass with Fr Peter Dawber & Fr Philip Moger. Rev Malcolm King was Deacon at the Mass assisted by Robert Snelling as Acolyte.

Above: Bishop David addresses the Candidates in his Homily and invites them to make a Profession of Faith and challenges them to stand up and live for that Faith - the Faith of the Church in Christ Jesus and his Gospel.

Below: The Bishop says the Confirmation Prayer over the candidates, invoking the Holy Spirit upon them.

The Bishop confirms a Candidate, saying:

"... be Sealed with the Gift of the Holy Spirit" and anointing him with Holy Chrism oil.

The Candidate is surrounded by his parents and sponsor. The Bishop also spoke personally to each Candidate and asked them for their Confirmation Name, usually a favourite saint's name.

The newly-Confirmed lead the parish in the Prayers of the Faithful, a vivid indication of their full membership in the parish community.

The Eucharistic Prayer is led by the Bishop. The Eucharist is the central action of the Church's life and the source and summit of the Christian life.

No doubt, the Confirmands will need to draw from the graces of the Table of the Word and the Altar of the Lord at every Mass in order to grow in the power of the Holy Spirit and to become fully alive and holy Christians; as indeed all Catholics need to!

After Holy Communion, the Bishop gave each Candidate a certificate and a copy of the Gospel of St Matthew.

The Bishop ends the Mass by pronouncing a Solemn Blessing over the Confirmandi and the parish.
