St Stephen's Church, Skipton

Virtual Tour - the Cemetery

Provision for Catholic burial was a major concern for the people of Skipton who built St Stephen's. As such this is one of the few churches in the diocese to have its own cemetery. The cemetery is a peaceful place with beautiful views and lovingly tended by the parishioners. It is a striking reminder of the communion of saints which comprises the departed in Purgatory, the living of the Church and the saints in Heaven.

The cemetery cross was blessed by Bishop William Gordon and installed in 1909 by the parishioners at the cost of £127. It is a striking stone and copper effigy with prayers carved around the base.

"Eternal rest grant unto them O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them.

May they rest in peace. Amen."
